Chapter Sixteen

Cara

Logan’s lost too many people to even discuss this. I’m not letting him lose Anton. Being a Phoenix without abilities isn’t that bad. So what if he only lives a human life? He’ll be much better off than dead at seventeen.

“I guess there’s nothing to discuss then,” I say, standing up and throwing my sandwich in the trash. I can’t even think about eating.

“Hold up,” Anton says. “This is my life we’re talking about, so I get to make the decision.”

“Are you insane?” Logan asks. “What decision is there? Whether you want to live or die? That’s a no brainer, even for someone with a metal plate in his head.”

Anton slams his fist down on the table. “Maybe you’re okay with living one life and then rotting in the ground, but I’m not. I’m supposed to have—what?”

“Five lives,” Mrs. Tillman says.

“Right. Five lives.”

“So you’re willing to risk this life, the only one you are guaranteed, for the slim possibility that my mom can heal you?” I shake my head at him. “You’re being an idiot. You have the best friend in the world, who wants to protect you and grow old with you.”

“Whoa, he’s my friend, not my lover.”

“Oh shut up with the stupid innuendos, and cut the crap, Anton.”

“I don’t need your permission, Cara. You aren’t my girlfriend.”

“That’s right. I’m not,” I say with as much bitterness as he’s showing me.

“I’m glad we’ve got that straight.” He sits back in his seat and glares at me.

Logan shoots us both a look. “Don’t make me referee between you two.” He leans across the table toward Anton. “Man, you can’t seriously be thinking about going through with this.”

“Why wouldn’t I think about it? I’m a sitting duck here. What can I do other than hang around and wait for a Hunter to kill me?”

“You can do plenty,” I say, but Anton holds his hand up to stop me.

“I’m talking to Logan,” he says.

“Don’t dismiss her like some nameless girl you—” Logan stops and looks at Mom. I’m sure he doesn’t want her knowing the truth about Anton because it might lead her to figure out Logan used to be that way too.

“Sorry,” Anton mumbles. I know he doesn’t mean it, but I let it go for Logan’s sake. “Look, I have to do something. I’m not cool with losing out on being a Phoenix.”

“And I’m not cool with you dying on a table with your head cut open,” Logan counters.

“I’m tough. You know that. No medical procedure is going to take me down.”

“If you’re so tough, then why do you need Phoenix powers?” Logan challenges.

Anton laughs. “You think you’re smart, don’t you?”

Logan shrugs and sits back.

“We all know I’ll be more helpful if I can throw fire.”

“You can’t throw fire if you’re dead,” I say.

“But I can come back from the dead and haunt your ass.”

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” I walk back over to Logan.

“I think it’s best if Anton takes some time to think this through.” Mom meets my gaze.
